The Harrison High School Quiz Bowl team is preparing for the national championship, after winning the state competition March 17 at Harrison. The Raiders' team of Jacob Schwartz, Noah Wert, Jon Hillary, Dean Weber, Nick Nolte, and Song Kim were undefeated against 14 qualifying teams.
"I was so proud of the way the team competed," says Coach Lyn Schneider. "The students played with class and graciousness, as well as skill. Several competitors' coaches complimented us on their skill and character and told me they were rooting for us to win. It has been a struggle sometimes this year playing in the strongest division of a very strong league, but they continued to study and try to improve as the season progressed. This is a wonderful validation of their efforts."
Team members practice after school to help develop their skills, as well as study on their own -- everything from geography to art, science and classical literature. The national championship will be in New Orleans Memorial Day weekend. The Harrison team placed sixth in the tournament last year and hope to improve this year.
Earlier this month, the Frosh/Soph team of Albert Quigley, Song Kim, Lynlee Rice and Evan Yandell (pictured below left to right) won the Frosh Soph State Championship at Ancilla College in Plymouth, Indiana.
