The TSC Board of School Trustees recognized Emma Prochno as the winner of this year’s student art contest. The TSC purchased the Harrison High School junior’s colored pencil and chalk pastel drawing for $200 and had it framed to be displayed at TSC Administrative Offices.

The Student Art Recognition program started in 1990 and rotates between elementary and secondary school submissions. A committee of art teachers and administrators judge the artwork that is submitted by art teachers from each school.

Emma titled her piece “In Deep Reflection,” which is a portrait of her friend, Anna.  “My sustained investigation, or theme, for my AP portfolio is music and different ways it affects us, which is reflected in the piece,” says Emma. “I was trying to find creative ways to express music without directly having something obvious like headphones or a speaker in it, which inspired me to dive into the phenomenon known as post-concert sadness. It is a time when people are often reflecting after such an exciting, high adrenaline experience.”

Harrison Art teacher Erin LaGuire says Emma is extremely hardworking and has an amazing eye for detail. “Emma chose to color her friend in colored pencil and to soften the reflection by coloring it with soft pastels,” LaGuire says. “Her talent shines through with each meticulous mark she made to emulate the delicate shadows on her friend’s face.”

The 2024 art contest runners-up are Kaydence Miller and Emerson Moore from Harrison High School.
